Cleaning Fruits and Vegetables with Vinegar

NBC 5 (Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas) featured a story on cyclospora due to the recent bagged lettuce outbreaks.  The information is also contained on its website nbcdfw.com, including a video segment.

The video segment and accompanying article recommends cleaning fruits and vegetables “with something with acidity” and notes lemon juice or vinegar.  Unfortunately, the video segment indicates that it is the “citric acid” in the products that kills the microorganisms.  Vinegar contains acetic acid.
